Second week of term's approaching and life for governors starts in earnest although there's been a lot of activity over the summer in one way and another.  In the coming week there are meetings for Finance and for Curriculum and Standards.

For those unfamiliar with how the governors work with the school here's a brief description of these two committees:
  • Finance is mainly concerned with the money side of the school.  This is where the annual budget awarded to the school by the local authority is divided up across the different functional areas such as salaries and the costs associated with the buildings.  Monthly expenditure is reviews by the committee to see how well expenditure matches the original planning.
  • Curriculum and Standards' name again indicates its role.  It looks at a wide range of teaching and learning activities including internal reviews of classroom practice; options to be offered to years 11, 12 and 13; and a range of policies including literacy and numeracy.  A main concern of this committee is how the performance of pupils at the different key stages (3, 4 & 5) compares to similar schools across Wales.

  1. Membership of these committees comes from the governing body, selecting members with expertise and those who have a particular interest. Some will bring professionl skills from outside and others will bring common sense and ask questions on behalf of parents and teachers
    Meetings can be liveley!
